Zaph Mann I bought this because it's distinct, even though I'd already been sent the album by music PR Favorite track: War over Instruments.

about

The Yips was recorded in New York with Matt Whyte and Parker Kindred during the latter part of 2016 and early 2017 before being mastered by Bob Weston at the end of that year. Other special guests from Whyte’s musical circle include Steve Marion (Delicate Steve), American soul singer Martha Redbone, John Chao from the band Misha, and double bass player Joanna Sternberg. From across the world, Australian contributions came from Aidan Roberts from the Maple Trail, Dance’s husband Johnny Dance (Dance et al) and the cellist Gus Gardiner.

The overwhelming mood of The Yips is one of exploration and meditation. Its tranquil musings navigate a range of musical genres with dexterity and subtlety. Folk music provides the overarching framework and canvas for these 11 songs but the colours, tones and movement of the music draw from jazz, dream-pop, post-rock, baroque indie and soul music. You'll meet exiled Chinese poets, writers and activists, but listen carefully and you'll discover other personalities peppered through Dance's songs, including John Fahey, Judy Sills, Virginia Woolf and the New Pornographers.
